Finding the Lost Self: The Journey Back to Yourself
When you’re in the midst of depression, burnout, or trapped in a narcissistic relationship, it can feel like you’ve completely lost touch with who you are. What once was a clear sense of self – knowing what you want, where you’re headed – now seems like a distant memory. It’s as if your entire energy is consumed by the need to just survive. Your needs, dreams, and desires fall to the background, and you find yourself becoming a mere shadow of who you once were.
In a narcissistic relationship, your needs are constantly pushed aside to cater to someone else’s. Over time, you start believing that you don’t have the right to feel what you feel, or to set boundaries. Depression and burnout then strip away what little strength remains, leaving you feeling like a stranger in your own life.
But here’s the truth: this is not a permanent state. It is possible to recover and reconnect with yourself.
How can you begin to rediscover yourself?
This is a good place to start: increasing your awareness – noticing the moments when you give up your power and asking yourself why. When you start recognizing these patterns, you can begin the journey back to yourself.
One good exercice for this is to take a moment to reflect on the past week through these questions:
- When this week did I not say NO, even though I wanted to?
- What was the impact on me when I didn’t say NO?
- What belief was behind my decision to not say NO?
- When and where did I learn this belief?
- Who would I be without this belief?
- Where in my life am I not saying YES, even though I want to?
These questions can help you start reconnecting with your inner strength and recognizing the moments where you give more than you should.
